What can you expect from this trip?
The Athirapally–Malakkappara jungle safari takes you through one of the most intact stretches of Western Ghats rainforest still open to visitors. This is a full day inside a living ecosystem — from river level at Thumboormuzhy all the way up to a border hill station at nearly 3,000 feet elevation, with waterfalls, jungle roads, wild elephants, and rolling tea estates in between.
The journey covers 40 kilometres of jungle road. The landscape shifts continuously as you climb — riverbanks, dense canopy, open grasslands, and finally the cool plateau of Malakkappara.
Start: 7:30 AM | Return: ~7:00 PM
Pickup: Chalakudy town | Vehicle: AC car
Available as: Private or Group Tour
Where the Road Ends and the Jungle Begins
loses the city heat and starts to smell like damp earth and crushed leaves. You roll down the windows because you don’t want to miss the sound of the jungle waking up.
The road starts to climb and twist. On your left, the trees are so thick you can’t see the ground. On your right, the hills begin to drop away, giving you peaks at the green valley below. You aren’t just driving; you are moving through a living, breathing world.
One moment, you are under a dark canopy of giant trees. The next, you break out into open grasslands where the sun hits the mountain tops. You feel your phone signal disappear, and honestly, you won’t even miss it. Your eyes stay glued to the bushes, hoping to spot a flash of orange or a grey shadow moving between the trunks.
It is quiet, but never silent. You hear the birds calling to each other from the trees. You can even hear the monkeys moving through the leaves high above your head.By the time you reach the top, you feel like a different person. This isn’t just a road trip—it’s the moment you finally disconnect from the world and plug back into nature.
One Important Tip Before You Book
Arrive in Chalakudy the evening before your tour. Starting fresh from Chalakudy at 7:30 AM means you catch the best wildlife activity windows, the early morning light at the waterfalls, and avoid any last-minute travel stress. Your Kerala Travel team can recommend good stay options when you book.

Thumboormuzhy — River, Dam and Garden
Your day begins here at a wide, calm stretch of the Chalakudy River. There is a riverside garden, a check dam, and direct stone-step access to the water. The mountain backdrop and the still-water reflection of the hills make this one of the best photography spots on the entire route.
Tip: Wear footwear that is easy to remove. Carry a small towel.
The Suspension Bridge
A hanging bridge spans the Chalakudy River within the Thumboormuzhy area. Walking across it gives you an open view of the river below and forested hills on both sides. Best experienced in the early morning before crowds arrive. Great for photography.
Butterfly Park
A natural garden habitat for Western Ghats butterfly species. Sightings depend on season — August through November is the richest period. Even outside peak season the garden is peaceful and worth a short visit.
Athirapally Waterfalls
Kerala’s largest waterfall at 80 feet. You can experience it from two vantage points — the top view gives a wide aerial perspective, the bottom view puts you right at the base where the noise and mist are overwhelming. Both are worth doing and the tour allows time for both.
The forest trails here pass through a protected reserve. Keep your eyes open on the path — hornbills, lion-tailed macaques and other wildlife are frequently spotted just walking between viewpoints.
Tip: Wear proper shoes for the descent to the base. The path is steep and can be slippery.
Charpa Falls
A seasonal waterfall between Athirapally and Vazhachal, visible directly from the roadside. At full flow during monsoon months it is dramatic. Between June and October this is a genuine highlight. In dry months the flow reduces significantly.
Vazhachal Waterfalls
Wider and more panoramic than Athirapally, Vazhachal spreads across a broad rocky bed with multiple channels. The dense forest here is an active elephant corridor — sightings near Vazhachal are fairly common.
Peringalkuthu
A hydel reservoir deep in the jungle surrounded by thick forest and rare birdlife. Access availability for tourists varies — your Kerala Travel team will confirm the current status when you book.
Anakkayam — The Elephant Lake
Anakkayam means “elephant pool” in Malayalam. These natural lakes sit in a jungle clearing where wild elephants, deer and other animals come to drink — particularly in the summer months. Watching a wild elephant in this setting is completely different from any captive wildlife experience.
Tip: Follow your guide's instructions carefully here. Stay quiet, maintain distance, no sudden movements.
The 40 km Jungle Safari Drive
From the forest road onward, you climb continuously through 40 kilometres of uninterrupted jungle. No towns, no traffic, patchy mobile signal — just forest on both sides of a winding road that rises steadily toward Malakkappara. Bird calls, deer crossing the road, the air getting cooler as you gain altitude. This drive takes roughly 90 minutes and the journey itself is the experience.
Malakkappara Hill Station and Tea Estate Trek
Malakkappara sits on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border near Valparai. The plateau is covered in working tea estates where you can watch workers hand-plucking fresh leaves. Your guide will take you on a short one to two kilometre walk through the estate. The elevation here is noticeably cooler than the valley — often 5 to 8 degrees lower — and on a clear day the views stretch across both states.
Tip: Carry a light layer or jacket. It can be surprisingly cold and windy at the top.
Wildlife You May Encounter
Sightings are never guaranteed but this corridor is genuinely rich. Early morning is the most productive time, which is exactly why the tour starts at 7:30 AM.
Asian elephant, gaur, spotted deer, sambar, lion-tailed macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, Malabar hornbill, Indian roller, jungle fowl, kingfisher, monitor lizard, and over 30 butterfly species native to the Western Ghats.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time does the tour start and where does pickup happen?
Your trip begins in Chalakudy town at 7:30 AM. You will know exactly where to meet us once your booking is done. We send you the final pickup details so you can find us easily. This keeps your morning simple and helps you start your Kerala journey on time.
Why is staying in Chalakudy the night before recommended?
It gives you a relaxed start, ensures punctual departure, and puts you in position to catch early morning wildlife activity which is the best window of the entire day.
Is this tour suitable for children and elderly travelers?
Most people can enjoy every stop on this trip. You need to be fit to walk down to the falls. The tea estate trek also requires some effort from you. We will help you choose the best paths for your group.
Will we definitely see wild elephants?
Sightings cannot be guaranteed on any specific day. However this is a highly active corridor and our guides know the best spots and timing to give you the best chance.
What if it rains on the tour day?
Light rain enhances the experience — the forest is more alive, the falls are stronger and the jungle road is atmospheric. The tour runs in light to moderate rain. In cases of severe weather your team will contact you in advance.
Is the jungle road safe to drive?
Yes. It is a forest department approved route and all our drivers are experienced on this terrain. The road is monitored and regularly used.
What is the difference between private and group tours?
A private tour means the vehicle is exclusively yours — you set the pace and stops. A group tour follows a shared schedule. Private is ideal for families and couples; group tours suit solo travelers.
Is there mobile network on the jungle road?
Coverage is good near Chalakudy and the waterfalls. Once you enter the deep jungle road toward Malakkappara, connectivity drops significantly. Let your family know before you leave.
How physically demanding is the full day?
This trip is mostly easy for everyone. You will walk on flat paths during the jungle drive. Walking down to the falls takes a bit more energy from you. The tea estate trek is active but does not require special training. We make sure the pace feels comfortable for your whole group.
How far in advance should I book?
Book your trip as early as you can. This is very important for weekends and the busy months from October to January. You might miss out on your favorite date if you wait too long. We often fill up fast during these peak times. Planning ahead ensures you get the exact day you want for your journey.
Can the itinerary be customized?
We can build the perfect trip just for you. You can spend more time at your favorite spots or change the plan. Just talk to us about your ideas when you book your tour. We listen to what you want and adjust the day to fit. This ensures you enjoy every minute of your time in Kerala.

This makes it easy for you to lock in your plans and start your trip.
What is the total distance covered in the tour?
The jungle safari drive alone covers 40 kilometres one way. Including travel to and from Chalakudy and stops along the route, expect to cover well over 100 kilometres across the full day.
Is this tour only for adventure travelers?
Everyone can enjoy this trip. It is perfect for families, couples, and people who love nature and photos. You will see the real beauty of the Western Ghats at a slow pace. We visit many different places so there is something fun for everyone to see. You can relax and take your time at every stop along the way.
What makes Kerala Travel different from other operators running this route?
We go all the way to Malakkappara — many operators stop short. We run small, personalized groups, our drivers and guides are local and deeply familiar with the route, and we genuinely care about making your day memorable rather than just completing a schedule.
